Nick Efrossynis started from humble beginnings, growing up on a dairy farm in Central Queensland, far removed from the urban life of Sydney. He began his real estate career in 1974. Since then, he's gone from strength to strength, opening his first franchise before the age of 26. He's now co-Principal of the award-winning Laing+Simmons Kingsford franchise.

We talked to Nick about what's changed in real estate over the past four decades.

From Kings Cross to Kingsford

After moving down to Sydney from rural Queensland, Nick went straight into real estate after finishing high school, gaining experience in leasing, property management and sales in the Bondi area. Keen to get his career underway, he undertook the 18 month real estate licensing course at Randwick TAFE but had to wait until he turned 21 before he could apply for his licence.

At the age of 25, armed with further qualifications in strata management, auctioneering and valuation, Nick was well on his way to success:

"I opened my first franchise office in 1981 just before my 26th birthday around the corner from the Laing+Simmons Kings Cross office. In 1986, I took over a small franchise office in Kingsford and asked Spencer Simmons [one of the founders of Laing+Simmons] if he would consider giving me a Laing+Simmons franchise for that office. I walked out of that meeting with not just the Kingsford franchise but the Maroubra franchise as well."

Laing+Simmons Kingsford recently celebrated its 31st anniversary. Nick's son Dean followed in his father's footsteps, joining the agency straight out of school in 2006 and becoming Partner/Director 10 years later.

Adapting to a changing industry

Nick has witnessed many changes to the industry over his 44 years in real estate. In the 1970s, all print advertising was in black and white newsprint, open homes were a rarity and it was the buyers you had to win over. Private treaty sales were the norm and auctions only started to become popular in the mid-1980s.

In light of these changes, Nick believes that the key to success in real estate is to accommodate change while holding on to tradition: "We need to balance the shift in marketing trends so that traditional markets are not being forgotten in the quest to do business with the new millennial consumers of today."

It is people that make Laing + Simmons stand out from its competitors.

The Laing+Simmons difference

Laing+Simmons has been Nick's professional home for 31 years. While much has changed, "the constant that has never changed over these years is the camaraderie that exists within our group and more specifically within our regions."

"It is people that make Laing+Simmons stand out from its competitors. People who run the offices and people who work in them."
